SOLAR IN OXFORD IS RARELY A STANDARD JOB

Solar isn’t just about panels on a roof. It’s about understanding how your household uses energy, when it needs it, and how to make the most of what you generate.

At BlackRock, we design residential solar and EV charging systems around real life, not assumptions. That means systems sized properly for your home, installed with care, and supported long term.

Whether you’re starting with solar, adding battery storage, or installing an EV charger, we’ll help you make informed decisions without pressure.

Oxford's housing is older, tighter and more varied than most of the county. A Headington semi, a Jericho terrace and a new build in Barton Park all need a different approach, and a one-size-fits-all quote from a national installer usually hasn't accounted for that. Three things come up again and again on Oxford jobs.

Terraced houses in East Oxford, Jericho and Osney often have smaller, split or north-south roofs. That changes how many panels fit and which way they face, so we survey every roof before we quote rather than working from a satellite image.

Large parts of Oxford sit in conservation areas. Solar is still usually allowed, but there are rules about which roof slopes it can go on, and listed buildings need consent. We check this before you spend a penny and tell you straight if a roof isn't going to work.

Narrow streets, permit parking and shared access are part of Oxford life. We plan scaffolding, deliveries and parking with you in advance so the job doesn't become a problem for you or your neighbours.

Before you pick up the phone, see what to expect from a BlackRock solar install, from first enquiry to switch-on, so there are no surprises along the way.

WHAT WE INSTALL IN OXFORD

HOME EV Charging

Safe, certified EV chargers integrated into your existing electrical system. Installed with capacity, safety, and future proofing in mind, and designed to work seamlessly alongside solar and battery storage.

Home solar PV systems

Designed around how your household uses energy, not headline figures. We assess usage patterns, roof layout, and future plans to size systems properly, so solar works efficiently from day one and continues to deliver long-term value.

Battery storage

Battery storage is optional, not automatic.
When appropriate, it helps you use more of the energy you generate, support evening and overnight use, and reduce reliance on the grid during peak times.

HOME EV Charging

Fitted alongside solar or on its own, and set up to charge when your panels are generating or when your tariff is cheapest.

Home solar PV systems

Sized around how your household actually uses energy, not headline figures. Panels, inverter, monitoring and all the paperwork handled, including the MCS certificate you need for export payments.

Battery storage

Worth it if you are out during the day and use most of your electricity in the evening, which is most Oxford households. We will tell you if it is not worth it for you. Batteries can be added to an existing system too, and you can spread the cost with finance if that helps

IFFLEY, OXFORD

SOLAR PANELS ON A GABLE WALL: A RENOVATION NEAR IFFLEY

When a full renovation in south-east Oxford left no conventional pitched roof to work with, the easy answer would have been to say solar was not an option. Instead we designed around the building: four panels on the new flat roof and three mounted vertically on the tiled gable wall. Once the builders finish, we return to fit the inverter and a 9 kWh battery. Solar designed for the house, not bolted on top of it.

  • 7 Panels fitted
  • 9 KWH Battery on completion
  • FLAT ROOF & GABLE Two mounting types

BlackRock Electrical installed my home solar PV system and battery storage. A lovely, professional and friendly team arrived and did a great job. They clearly took pride in their work; not least ensuring all the labels are beautifully aligned. Support following the installation has been really superb. I can't fault this company and would happily recommend them.

SHADE, A CHIMNEY AND A 10 KWH BATTERY: SOLAR ON AN EXTENSION ROOF

A home renovation and extension gave this family a large new flat roof, but the main roof and chimney cast shade across it at different points of the day. We fitted eight panels making a 3.68 kW array and gave every panel its own optimiser, so one shaded panel no longer drags the rest down, then paired it with a 10 kWh battery to hold daytime generation for the evening. Since switch-on the system has produced more than our design software predicted.

  • 8 Panels, 3.68 kW
  • 10 KWH Battery storage
  • OPTIMISERS One per panel

TWENTY PANELS AND EVERYTHING TIDY: A 9.2 KW INSTALLATION

Big systems are only as good as the details. On this detached home we installed twenty panels making a 9.2 kW array, finished with bird protection along the panel edges so nothing nests underneath. Every cable entry through the roof was sealed and protected to keep it weatherproof, and the inverter and battery were sited in the garage, out of sight and easy to get at. Air conditioning is planned next, a natural pairing when the panels produce most on the days you want to cool the house.

  • 20 Panels, 9.2 kW
  • GARAGE Inverter and battery
  • SEALED Protected roof entry

This hot weather has been difficult to live with but the solar panels have loved it, the way the system works is so impressive. For this summer our electricity has been free, or rather we have made a small profit! Amazing.

THE COTSWOLDS

2,500 KWH GENERATED, 1.94 KWH IMPORTED: A SOLAR BUNGALOW

Some numbers are worth leading with. Twelve high-output 505 W panels on a single-storey stone bungalow make a 6 kW array, fitted with bird protection for a neat finish against the Cotswold roof. In its first four months, the system generated over 2,500 kWh, and the home drew just 1.94 kWh from the grid, which is about as self-sufficient as a house gets through a British summer.

  • 12 Panels, 6 kW
  • 2,500 KWH First four months
  • 1.94 KWH Bought from the grid

What MCS Certification Means for Homeowners

MCS certification gives homeowners and businesses confidence that their system is not just installed, but installed properly, with long-term performance and compliance in mind. For homeowners, MCS certification is essential if you want to export excess solar energy back to the grid and receive payments through the Smart Export Guarantee.

It also provides reassurance that:

  • Your system has been sized correctly for your household
  • Safety and electrical compliance have been independently verified
  • Documentation is in place for future sale, insurance, or upgrades

In short, it protects your investment and ensures your solar system performs as expected for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I have solar panels in an Oxford conservation area?

Usually, yes. Solar on a house in a conservation area is normally allowed under permitted development, but not on a roof slope that faces the road if it would be visible from it. We check your address against the council's conservation area map before we quote, and if it needs an application we will tell you and help with it.

  • Can I put solar panels on a listed building in Oxford?

Listed buildings need listed building consent for solar, whatever the conservation area status. It is not impossible, but it is slower and not every application succeeds. We will give you an honest view before you commit to anything.

  • My roof is small. Is solar still worth it?

Often, yes. A terrace roof with room for six to eight panels can still cover a good chunk of a household's daytime use, and pairing it with a battery makes more of what you generate. The survey will tell you the real numbers for your roof, and if it does not add up we will say so.

  • How do you handle parking and scaffolding on narrow streets?

We plan it with you before the job starts. That means agreeing where the scaffold goes, sorting parking suspensions or permits if needed, and letting neighbours know. Scaffolding is usually up for a few days either side of the install.

  • Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

In most cases, no. Residential solar is permitted development unless you are in a conservation area with a road-facing roof, in a listed building, or in a flat. We will confirm for your address.

  • How long does a solar panel installation take?

The install itself is usually two to three days. The full journey from first enquiry to switch-on is typically three to six weeks, most of which is waiting for the network operator to approve the connection. See the full process step by step.

    Your Solar Journey
  • How much do solar panels cost in Oxford?

It depends on roof size, system size, and whether you add a battery. For real figures from local jobs, read our guide to solar panel costs in Oxfordshire.

    How Much Does Solar Cost?
  • Is there still 0% VAT on solar?

Yes. Solar panels and battery storage (including batteries added to an existing system) are zero-rated for VAT on residential installs until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate goes back to 5%. On a typical install that is a few hundred pounds, so if you are already planning solar it is worth knowing the date.

  • Can you fit air conditioning at the same time?

Yes. We install air conditioning as well as solar, and the two work well together because your panels cover a lot of the running cost in summer. If that is on your list, our air conditioning cost guide has the numbers.

  • You are in Abingdon. Do you really cover Oxford?

Yes. Abingdon is six miles from the city centre and we are in Oxford most weeks. You get a local team that can come back if you ever need us, not a national installer's subcontractor.
